The University on the Niger (UNINIGER), Umunya, has ushered its 2029 MBBS Clinical Class into the next phase of their medical education with the institution’s maiden White Coat Ceremony.
The ceremony, held on Sept. 12 at the College of Medicine, Iyienu, marked the students’ transition into clinical training and their closer engagement with patient care.
Declaring the occasion a landmark in the students’ journey into the medical profession, the Chancellor of the University and Bishop on the Niger, His Lordship, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Chiedozie Nwokolo, urged them to remain resilient, disciplined and hardworking throughout their training.

He encouraged the students to remain committed to their calling and trust in God’s grace as they navigate the rigorous demands of medical education.
The Vice-Chancellor, The Very Rev. Prof. Chinedu Nebo, CON, congratulated the students on reaching the clinical phase of their training, describing it as a significant achievement.
Prof. Nebo urged them to take their studies seriously and live up to the expectations of their parents, the university and society.
The Provost of the College of Medicine, Iyienu, Prof. Uche Onwudiegwu, tasked the students to uphold the ethics and professional standards of medicine.
He emphasised the need for empathy, compassion and beneficence in patient care, advising them to treat every patient with dignity and provide care without discrimination.
The Guest Lecturer, Prof. Dr. Uchenna Nwosu, a doyen in the medical profession, reminded the students that wearing the white coat comes with significant responsibilities.
He advised them to remain dedicated to their studies, uphold the principles of the Hippocratic Oath, protect patient confidentiality, respect human life and pursue clinical excellence.
The ceremony was attended by Dr. (Mrs.) Elsie Nwokolo (Mama Niger); Prof. Dr. Chukwudi Okani, Dean, College of Medicine; Ven. Dr. Chinedu Nnatuanya, Registrar, University on the Niger, Umunya; Prof. Christian Bolu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, College of Medicine; Mrs. Ngozi Amamchukwu, Bursar; Rev. Canon Maxwell Njoku, Dean of Student Affairs; members of the academic and non-academic staff, and other distinguished guests.
The maiden ceremony underscored UNINIGER’s commitment to preparing future medical professionals with the knowledge, competence, ethics and compassion required to serve patients and society.
