The importance of preserving cultural identity and sustaining indigenous traditions was highlighted at the Iri Ji Festival of Umueri, as political leaders, government officials and community stakeholders joined the traditional ruler, HRM Igwe Ben Izuchukwu Emeka, to celebrate the new yam harvest on October 10.
The festival attracted prominent personalities, including the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua; Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Nkem Udeze; and Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnake.
Others in attendance were the member representing Anambra East and West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Aniekwe, and the Mayor of Anambra East Local Government Area, Hon. Ifeanyi Chinweze, alongside other dignitaries and community stakeholders.
Beyond celebrating the new yam harvest, the festival provided an opportunity for the people of Umueri to reaffirm their cultural values, customs and communal bonds that define their collective identity.
Traditional rites and cultural displays formed important parts of the celebration, demonstrating the continued relevance of indigenous festivals in connecting younger generations with their ancestral heritage and expressing gratitude for the blessings of a successful farming season.
The event also highlighted the role of traditional institutions in promoting unity, fostering peaceful relationships and preserving longstanding cultural practices in the face of changing societal influences.
For the people of Umueri, the Iri Ji Festival remains a significant cultural event that symbolises gratitude for agricultural blessings, respect for ancestral traditions and recognition of the community’s traditional institution under the leadership of Igwe Emeka.
The presence of government officials and political leaders further underscored the importance of cooperation between government, traditional rulers and local communities in safeguarding the cultural heritage of Anambra State.
The festival ended on a celebratory note, bringing together harvest thanksgiving, cultural expression and communal solidarity while reaffirming the enduring importance of indigenous traditions in the life of the Umueri community.
