The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has on Oct 13, called for a thorough investigation into the alleged abuse of a nine-year-old boy in Awkuzu, Oyi Local Government Area, stressing the need to protect children from violence and maltreatment.
The incident reportedly involved Miss Onyinye Nwobodo, who allegedly assaulted her nine-year-old nephew following the loss of a sum of money. Reacting to the report, Onyekesi described the allegation as disturbing and unacceptable, emphasising that no domestic disagreement or financial loss could justify violence against a child.
The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to safeguarding children’s rights, welfare and dignity. She stressed that the circumstances surrounding the incident must be thoroughly investigated and that anyone found culpable should face the consequences prescribed by law.

Onyekesi assured the public that the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare would take appropriate steps within its mandate to ensure that the case receives the necessary attention, adding that the child’s safety and welfare remained the ministry’s priority.
She cautioned parents and guardians against using violence as a means of discipline, noting that children need patience, understanding, guidance and responsible care. According to her, discipline should never be used as a justification for physical or emotional abuse.
The commissioner further stressed that protecting children from abuse was a shared responsibility requiring the vigilance and cooperation of parents, guardians, community leaders, security agencies and members of the public.
She urged residents to promptly report suspected cases of child abuse to the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare or the nearest security agency, noting that early reporting and timely intervention could help prevent further harm to vulnerable children.
Onyekesi reiterated the ministry’s commitment to strengthening child-protection initiatives across Anambra State, insisting that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, caring and supportive environment where their rights are respected and their dignity upheld.
