Residents of Oduke, Ugwuagba, Obosi, in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra, have appealed to the state and Federal Governments to urgently intervene in the erosion menace threatening lives, homes and public infrastructure in the community.
The residents said the erosion had cut off the road linking Awada and Electrical, Obosi, disrupting movement and making it difficult for residents to access schools, markets and healthcare facilities.
They added that businesses in the area had also suffered as a result of the worsening situation.
The Chairman of Ugwuagba Obosi Landlords Association, Mr. Chiemelie Nduka, and the Secretary, Mr. Lawrence Machebe, said the erosion began after the road was graded by a previous administration.
They said residents had made several efforts to control the erosion, including the construction of culverts and drainage channels, but the measures had failed to halt its spread.
Nduka and Machebe appealed to the government to intervene urgently to prevent further damage to homes, roads and other infrastructure in the area.
Reacting, the Acting Managing Director of the Anambra State Erosion, Watershed and Climate Change Agency (ANSEWCCA), Mr. Ifeanyi Nwasinoke, urged residents to work with relevant authorities to contain the erosion.
Nwasinoke stressed the need for collective action, saying that an injury to one resident could ultimately affect the entire community.
He also advised residents to stop dumping refuse into the erosion channel, warning that such practices could aggravate the problem.
Other residents joined the appeal for urgent intervention by the state and Federal Governments to control the erosion and protect the community from further destruction.
