Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, has appealed to the people of Aguleri and Umuoba Anam communities to immediately cease hostilities, embrace peace and dialogue in the interest of protecting lives and property.
Nweke made the call against the backdrop of the renewed tension between the two communities, following Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s intervention and plans for an emergency meeting with stakeholders from both sides to address the longstanding dispute and seek a lasting resolution.
The Attorney General stressed that grievances should be presented through recognised community stakeholders and resolved through dialogue rather than violence.
He warned that resorting to armed conflict could further escalate insecurity, lead to loss of lives and destruction of property, and deepen the hardship already experienced by residents of the affected communities.
Nweke, therefore, urged the people of Aguleri and Umuoba Anam to sheath their swords, exercise restraint and give peace a chance, assuring that the government was committed to finding a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the dispute.
He also commended Governor Soludo for his intervention, noting that the administration’s efforts were aimed at restoring peace, protecting lives and property, and addressing the underlying issues fueling the conflict.
The commissioner called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youths and other stakeholders to support the peace process and ensure that the situation does not escalate further.
