The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has appointed an experienced academic administrator, Prof. Peter Onwualu, as Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of the Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam.
The move signals the administration’s push to strengthen governance and academic standards in the state-owned university system.
Onwualu, who currently serves as Vice-Chancellor of the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, brings decades of experience in academia, research, and public sector leadership. A former Director-General of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, he has built a reputation for institutional development and innovation in engineering.
With over 200 academic publications, multiple patents, and fellowships across numerous professional bodies, his appointment is widely seen as a strategic choice to reposition the university.
Other members of the governing council include Chief Christopher Ndubuisi, traditional ruler Igwe Chidiume Oranu, Prof. Josephat Ogbuagu, and retired AIG Chris Ezike, thus bringing a mix of academic, traditional, and security experience to the board will enhance policy direction and institutional stability at COOU, as the university seeks to expand its academic footprint and improve governance structures.
