Rev. Fr. Donatus Oragwam, Parish Priest, St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Amawbia in Awka South LGA, Anambra State has urged all, especially Christians to seek holiness over worldly gain, emphasizing that material things of this world are ephemeral.

Fr. Oragwam gave the admonishion in a Homily to mark the Solemnity of Christ the King at the Parish on November 23.

“Today, we celebrate the great feast of Christ the King, marking the last Sunday in the Church’s liturgical calendar. It is a powerful reminder that Jesus Christ reigns not just over the Church, but over all creation, all nations, and all hearts. Next Sunday, we begin a new season: Advent, the time of preparation for His coming.

“Throughout the liturgical year, we have heard God’s Word in joy and sorrow, in the Mass and in life’s daily moments. Today, the Church crowns the year by proclaiming that Jesus is the King of the Universe, Lord over time and eternity.”

He explained that unlike earthly kings who rule from thrones of power and prestige, Jesus ruled from the Cross. He wore a crown of thorns, not of gold. He entered Jerusalem not on a horse of war, but on a humble donkey. He walked freely among the poor, healed the sick, and forgave sinners. He showed us that true kingship is service, sacrifice, and love.

The cleric emphasized that Christ, though King of the Universe, came in humility, born in a manger, living simply, and serving others. Christians are called to lead by service, not power.

According to him, Jesus gave His life for humanity. Christians are to love selflessly, putting others’ needs before theirs, especially the poor, the weak, and the forgotten.

“Throughout the liturgical year, we hear God’s Word. The Feast of Christ the King reminds us to let Christ reign in our decisions, words, and actions. A true Christian reflects Christ in speech, conduct, forgiveness, and compassion. As subjects of Christ the King, our hearts must be pure and sincere.

“Jesus did not shy away from speaking the truth, even when it led to the Cross. Christians must uphold truth and justice in all circumstances.”

He said that Christ’s Kingdom is not of this world. The feast reminds us to live with eternity in view, seeking holiness over worldly gain.

Christ is King of all nations. We are called to love beyond tribe, race, or status, promoting unity and peace.
As we celebrate His Kingship, Fr. Oragwam reminded the congregation to constantly thank and worship Christ not just with lips, but with lives that honor Him.

“This feast challenges Christians to ask: Is Christ truly King in my life, in my heart, my home, my choices?
