As the world marks Social Media Day on June 30, the impact of digital platforms is becoming increasingly evident in Anambra State, where businesses, government institutions and young entrepreneurs are harnessing technology to create opportunities and drive development.
Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, LinkedIn and WhatsApp have transformed the way businesses operate. From established companies to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, business owners now use social media to market their products and services, engage customers, build their brands and expand their reach beyond geographical boundaries at relatively low cost.
Social media has strengthened governance in the state. Ministries, departments and agencies now use digital platforms to communicate government policies and programmes, providing updates on projects and engaging directly with residents, improving access to information, enhancing transparency and encouraging greater citizen participation in governance.
For many young people, social media has become a pathway to employment, innovation and financial independence. Across the state, youths are building careers as content creators, digital marketers, software developers, graphic designers, online educators, influencers and e-commerce entrepreneurs, highlighting the expanding opportunities within the digital economy.
Despite these gains, the growing use of social media also presents challenges, including misinformation, cybercrime, online fraud, cyberbullying and hate speech. Stakeholders have therefore emphasised the need for responsible use of digital platforms, improved digital literacy and the verification of information before it is shared.
As Social Media Day is celebrated globally, residents of Anambra have been encouraged to maximise the positive potential of social media by supporting local businesses, promoting innovation, engaging constructively in civic affairs and using digital platforms responsibly for the benefit of society.
