The Mayor of Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Mr Chimezie Obi, has called on residents and public servants to return fully to their designated places of work on Mondays, warning that the continued observance of the sit-at-home order is severely damaging the state’s economy.
He made this appeal when state information officers posted to the council paid him a courtesy visit at the council headquarters. The mayor used the opportunity to stress the importance of regular attendance at work, particularly on Mondays, which have in recent times been marked by low economic and social activity.
Addressing council workers, the mayor commended those who have remained committed to their duties despite prevailing challenges. He encouraged others to emulate their example, noting that dedication to work is critical for the growth and stability of the local government and the state at large.
Mr Obi further warned that workers who deliberately absent themselves from duty without valid reasons risk losing their legitimate claims, allowances, and other incentives tied to active service.
According to him, consistent attendance is not only a responsibility but also a requirement for accessing full employment benefits.
The mayor highlighted the broader economic consequences of the sit-at-home directive, stating that it has led to reduced productivity, loss of revenue, and hardship for businesses and families. He emphasized that the policy continues to weaken the local economy and hinder development efforts.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to progress, the mayor urged all stakeholders, including traders, civil servants, and residents, to support efforts aimed at restoring normalcy and boosting economic activities across the council area.
