The Chairman of Anambra East Local Government Area(LGA), Hon. Sir Ifeanyi Chinweze, on June 4 led residents and environmental officials in the compulsory monthly environmental sanitation exercise across the LGA, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to a cleaner and healthier environment.
The exercise involved the clearing of drainage channels, evacuation of refuse and cleaning of markets, streets and other public spaces to improve public health and protect critical infrastructure.

Residents turned out in large numbers to participate in the exercise, demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental cleanliness. Addressing participants, Sir Chinweze described a clean environment as essential to healthy living and sustainable development, urging residents to embrace sanitation as a daily responsibility rather than a once-a-month activity.
According to him, maintaining clean homes, markets and drainage systems helps prevent flooding, reduces the spread of diseases and creates a more attractive environment for businesses and investment.

While expressing satisfaction with the high level of compliance recorded in many communities, the LGA chairman disclosed that a few defaulters were apprehended and sanctioned in accordance with existing environmental laws, warning against indiscriminate waste disposal and the blockage of drainage channels, stressing that the LGA would continue to enforce environmental regulations to protect lives and public infrastructure.
Sir Chinweze commended community leaders, business owners, President-Generals and traditional rulers for mobilising residents to participate actively in the sanitation exercise, noting that the impressive turnout reflects widespread support for the vision of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to build a clean, green and livable Anambra State.
Also present were supervisory councillors, Heads of Departments, special advisers and the supervisor for environment, who joined residents at the council headquarters and various communities to monitor compliance and encourage participation.
Community leaders and residents described the exercise as timely and impactful, pledging to sustain the monthly sanitation culture, reaffirming their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote environmental sustainability, public health and an improved quality of life across Anambra East.
