Residents of Orumba South Local Government Area on July 4, recorded full compliance with the monthly statewide environmental sanitation exercise directed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State.
In Umunze, commercial activities were completely halted as shops were shut, roads deserted, and the popular Nkwo Market placed under lock and key from early morning hours until about 11 a.m.
During the exercise, traders at Nkwo Market engaged in sweeping, evacuation of refuse, desilting of drainage channels, and general cleaning of the market environment in line with government directive on environmental sanitation.
At the timber section of the market, popularly known as Ogbo Osisi, traders actively participated in the exercise, chanting solidarity songs as they cleaned their surroundings and disposed waste appropriately.
The Mayor of Orumba South Local Government Area, Hon. Shedrack Azubuike, personally supervised and monitored the exercise, moving round key locations alongside members of his enforcement team to ensure strict compliance.
During the inspection, the Mayor identified some environmental infractions and immediately ordered corrective measures where necessary.
In one instance, a shop owner was found to have covered and tiled over a drainage channel in front of his shop, thereby obstructing the free flow of water. The Mayor promptly ordered the reopening of the drain to restore proper water flow and avert possible flooding.
The Acting Chairman of Nkwo Market Traders Association, Umunze, Mr Izuchukwu Offor, attributed the success of the exercise to increased awareness and effective coordination, commending traders for their cooperation and active participation in the sanitation exercise.
