‎The Parish Priest of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Akpo, Aguata Local Government Area, Rev. Fr. Cyriacus Ubah, has urged Nigerians to cultivate vegetables within their homes and adopt regular walking as part of a healthier lifestyle to enhance longevity and reduce the prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases. The cleric made the call during his homily at a Mass held on August 2 at the church in Akpo.
‎
‎
‎Fr. Ubah observed that many of the country’s forefathers lived well into their 90s, attributing their longevity to healthier eating habits and active lifestyles. According to him, they consumed fresh vegetables harvested directly from their gardens and engaged in regular physical activity through walking.
‎
‎
‎He stressed that the land remains fertile and capable of supporting food production, noting that what is required is a change in attitude towards cultivating vegetable crops.
‎
‎
‎The priest encouraged residents with limited space to improvise by planting vegetables in old containers filled with loamy soil, describing the practice as a healthier alternative to consuming canned and highly processed foods preserved with artificial additives.
‎
‎
‎According to him, embracing home gardening could contribute significantly to reducing the increasing cases of kidney, liver and other organ-related ailments being recorded in hospitals.
‎
‎
‎Fr. Ubah further noted that unlike previous generations, modern society depends heavily on motorcycles, tricycles and cars for transportation, thereby reducing opportunities for physical exercise.
‎
‎
He advised Nigerians to deliberately incorporate walking into their daily routines whenever possible, saying that while vehicles are meant to make life easier, they should not replace all forms of physical activity.

‎
‎The cleric also encouraged vehicle owners to consider using bicycles for short-distance trips, maintaining that cycling and regular walking are effective ways of promoting physical fitness and overall well-being.
