‎Residents of Amafor West in Nkpor, Anambra State, are expressing growing concerns over the escalating issue of poor waste disposal, which they say poses a significant threat to public health and the environment. The community has been plagued by uncollected refuse for months, with heaps of waste accumulating along major roads, drainage channels, and residential areas.
‎
‎The situation has been exacerbated by irregular waste collection services and a lack of proper disposal facilities. Residents have lamented the unpleasant conditions, citing the risk of diseases such as malaria, cholera, and other infectious diseases. They also fear that the accumulation of waste has blocked drainage systems, leading to flooding during rainfall, and may contaminate water sources and degrade soil quality.
‎
‎Despite efforts to engage relevant authorities, residents say little has been done to address the issue. They are calling for urgent intervention, including regular waste collection, public awareness campaigns, and stricter enforcement of sanitation laws.
‎
‎A community leader, Mr. Innocent Ikechukwu, acknowledged the challenges and promised that steps are being taken to improve waste management in the area. He urged residents to pay their sanitation levy on time to facilitate effective waste management.
