A cross section of residents in Onitsha, lamented the recent increase in transportation fares, describing the situation as worrisome.
Speaking during a vox pop conducted in Onitsha, a corps member, Mr. Babatunde Azeez, said transportation has become more expensive, noting that he now pays ₦700 instead of the usual ₦500 to get to his office.
Mr. Azeez added that the development has affected him negatively, as he had to reduce his daily personal expenses to cope with the rising cost of transportation.
In his contribution, Mr. Victor Onyeka posited that the hike in fuel prices has not only affected the cost of food items but has also led to increased transportation costs.
He further complained that a tricycle (Keke) driver he engaged to convey his children to school has increased the monthly payment for the school run.
According to him, all efforts to persuade the driver to reconsider the increase proved abortive, thereby posing more financial strain on him and his family.
Also speaking, Mr. Anselem Onyeaku decried the high cost of fuel, noting that it has forced many people to trek longer distances before boarding tricycles.
Mr. Onyeaku urged the government to consider the hardship the high fuel prices have imposed on the masses and take necessary steps to stabilize the situation.
Similarly, Hon. Chuks Mmaduabuchi noted that the increase in transportation fares has significantly affected the movement of people during this period.
“With the current hike in transportation costs, I don’t think people intending to travel for activities this Easter season will find it easy,” he said.
