‎As the world marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17, stakeholders have called for stronger government policies, increased job opportunities and effective social protection programmes to address hardship and improve the welfare of vulnerable populations.
‎
‎The annual observance highlights the challenges confronting people living in poverty and renews global commitment to building a society where everyone has access to basic necessities, economic opportunities and a decent standard of living.
‎
‎Poverty remains a significant challenge in many communities, particularly in developing countries, where unemployment, rising living costs, limited access to quality education and inadequate healthcare continue to worsen living conditions.
‎

‎For many families, providing food, paying school fees, securing decent accommodation and accessing medical care have become daily struggles, underscoring the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
‎
‎In Nigeria, economic pressures have further exposed low-income earners, small business owners, rural communities and other disadvantaged groups to financial difficulties, making it increasingly challenging for many households to meet their basic needs.
‎
‎Stakeholders have consequently urged governments at all levels to implement policies that promote employment, support small and medium-sized businesses, boost agricultural productivity and expand access to education and healthcare.
‎
‎They have also emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in the implementation of poverty alleviation programmes to ensure that interventions reach those who need them most, particularly women, children, older persons and people living with disabilities.
‎
‎Beyond government efforts, experts have called for stronger collaboration among civil society organisations, private businesses, community leaders and individuals to provide skills acquisition programmes, financial assistance and economic opportunities that promote self-reliance.
‎
‎The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty also highlights the fact that poverty extends beyond a lack of financial resources to include the denial of dignity, opportunities and access to essential services.
‎
‎As the world commemorates the day, stakeholders have urged governments and other relevant organisations to translate commitments into concrete actions through job creation, stronger social protection systems and inclusive development policies to ensure that no one is left behind.
