The Anambra State Police Command has cautioned parents, particularly young and single mothers, against exposing their children to exploitation or abuse due to financial difficulties, social pressure or the pursuit of quick wealth.
The warning followed a recent investigation involving a 36-year-old woman in Onitsha and the rescue of four children, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement issued on Sept. 18.
SP Ikenga said the command recognised the economic and social challenges associated with raising children, particularly for young or single mothers and however, urged parents facing financial difficulties to seek legitimate means of livelihood and appropriate support rather than accepting arrangements that could expose their children to exploitation or other forms of abuse.
The command warned that children must not be placed at risk of sexual abuse, trafficking, pornography or other forms of exploitation in an attempt to overcome financial challenges. SP Ikenga stressed that the safety and wellbeing of children should remain a priority, regardless of the circumstances confronting their parents or guardians.
He urged parents to reject get-rich-quick schemes and avoid any arrangement that could compromise the safety, dignity and future of their children. “Your child’s safety must never become the price of financial survival.”
The police encouraged parents to seek lawful sources of income and available support while remaining vigilant against individuals or schemes that could put children at risk.
The command reiterated its commitment to protecting children and urged members of the public to report suspected cases of child exploitation, abuse or trafficking to the appropriate authorities.
