Parents and guardians of pupils at Uruoji Primary School, Nawfia, in Njikoka Local Government Area(LGA) of Anambra State, have commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for abolishing elaborate graduation ceremonies in public primary schools, describing the policy as a timely intervention that has eased the financial burden on families.

Speaking with the information officer on June 24, the parents said the decision has eliminated the numerous expenses usually associated with graduation ceremonies, including the purchase of special uniforms, souvenirs, decorations, entertainment, and other related costs.

One of the parents, Mrs. Ngozi Nwafor, described the governor’s action as thoughtful and responsive to the economic realities confronting many households.

“We are grateful to Governor Soludo for this decision. Many parents are struggling with the high cost of living. The money we would have spent on graduation ceremonies can now be channelled towards our children’s educational needs and the welfare of our families,” she said.

Also speaking, Mr. Chinedu Okeke, a guardian, noted that the policy promotes equity among pupils, irrespective of their parents’ financial status.

“Some parents find it difficult to meet all the expenses attached to graduation ceremonies. This policy ensures that no child feels excluded because of financial challenges. We appreciate the governor for considering the plight of ordinary families,” he said.

A member of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Mrs. Elizabeth Okoye, applauded the initiative, saying it would encourage schools to place greater emphasis on academic excellence and character development rather than expensive celebrations.

She added that the policy complements the state’s free education programme by reducing unnecessary financial pressure on parents.

“Education should focus on learning, discipline and preparing children for the future, not on ceremonies that place additional financial strain on families,” she said.

The parents and guardians praised Governor Soludo for his sustained investment in the education sector through the rehabilitation of schools, recruitment of qualified teachers, provision of learning facilities and other reforms aimed at improving the quality of education across Anambra State.

They unanimously agreed that the abolition of costly graduation ceremonies reflects the governor’s commitment to people oriented policies and his understanding of the economic challenges facing many families, while ensuring that access to quality education remains affordable for all.
