Christians have been urged to intensify evangelism and take the Gospel of Jesus Christ to communities that are yet to embrace the Christian faith.
The charge was given during the celebration of the 169th anniversary of the coming of Christianity to Igboland, held on July 27, at All Saints’ Anglican Church, Otolo, Nnewi. The event brought together members of the five churches in Otolo East Archdeaconry, Diocese of Nnewi (Anglican Communion), in a colourful gathering marked by worship, thanksgiving and cultural displays.
Delivering the sermon on the theme, “Conquering More Grounds for Christ,” Evan. Ozioma Obiora urged christians to remain committed to the Great Commission by reaching out to people who have not received the true Gospel. He stressed that God expects believers to reclaim lost grounds for Christ and positively transform society through faithful evangelism and godly living.
Speaking during the event, the Archdeacon of Otolo East Archdeaconry, Ven. Benson Okeke, expressed appreciation to the clergy, church workers and members of the archdeaconry for their unity and commitment in commemorating the historic anniversary. He urged Christians to continue thanking God for the gift of salvation and to remain steadfast in ensuring that the light of the Gospel continues to shine from generation to generation.
The anniversary celebration attracted a large congregation of Anglican faithful and other Christian worshippers from within and beyond the Archdeaconry. A dramatic presentation by members of Our Saviour Anglican Church, Otolo, Nnewi, vividly reenacted the arrival of the early Christian missionaries in Igboland, highlighting the historical significance of the advent of Christianity in the region.
The presentation highlighted the missionaries’ efforts in spreading the Gospel and confronting harmful traditional practices such as the killing of twins, slavery, human trafficking and idol worship. It also showcased the missionaries’ contributions to the establishment of schools and healthcare services, which laid the foundation for social development in many communities.
