The Mayor of Orumba South Local Government Area, Hon. Shedrack Azubuike, has inaugurated the Orumba South Congress of Councillors, urging members to conduct legislative business in accordance with relevant laws, standing rules and established procedures.
The Congress of Councillors, recognised under the Anambra State Local Government Administration Law, 2024, as the legislative arm of the local government, provides the institutional framework for legislative deliberations and representation at the grassroots.
Azubuike gave the charge on Oct. 28, while congratulating the councillors and urging them to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, transparency, mutual respect and commitment to the welfare of their constituents.
He said sustainable development required respect for the rule of law, clearly defined institutional responsibilities and the discharge of public duties within the limits of lawful authority.
The mayor stressed that an effective and responsible legislative arm was essential to strengthening democracy and ensuring proper representation at the grassroots.
He expressed his administration’s readiness to maintain a productive working relationship with the councillors, based on mutual respect, cooperation and recognition of the distinct roles of the executive and legislative arms of government.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Leader of the Congress of Councillors, Hon. Johnclems Chukwuemezie, who represents Owerre Ezukala Ward 2, thanked members for the confidence reposed in him.
Chukwuemezie pledged to lead with honesty, transparency and accountability, while maintaining a cordial working relationship with the mayor to advance the development of Orumba South Local Government Area.
