The Anambra Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has condemned the alleged physical abuse of a 10 year old girl by her aunt in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

The victim, Miss Chizoba Ifeanyi, who hails from Enugu State, was reportedly beaten by her aunt, Mrs Adaobi Agbonta, on Oct. 29 for allegedly refusing to sweep the house.

The incident reportedly attracted the attention of residents and passers by, who intervened after hearing the girl’s cries and rescued her. She was subsequently taken to hospital for medical attention.

Onyekesi described the incident as a violation of the child’s rights, stressing that refusal to perform a household chore could not justify subjecting a child to physical violence.

She warned parents, guardians and caregivers against using violence as a means of discipline, noting that every child deserved care, protection and respect.

The commissioner disclosed that the suspect had been arrested and was in police custody, adding that the matter would be pursued in accordance with the law and that anyone found culpable would face the appropriate legal consequences.

She assured the victim of the ministry’s support, saying that appropriate protective measures would be put in place to safeguard her and prevent further harm.

Onyekesi reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting children and addressing all forms of abuse, violence and maltreatment.

She urged residents to report suspected cases of child abuse, neglect and other forms of maltreatment to the relevant authorities.

The commissioner said protecting children required the collective vigilance of families, communities and government institutions.

She reiterated the ministry’s commitment to upholding the rights, dignity and welfare of every child in Anambra.
