The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has urged residents to break the silence surrounding mental-health challenges and build a more compassionate society where people can seek help without fear of stigma or discrimination.

Mrs. Onyekesi made the call in a message ahead of the World Mental Health Day observance on October 9, stressing that mental health deserves the same attention and care as physical health.

The Commissioner noted that women, children and other vulnerable persons could be particularly affected by experiences such as abuse, domestic violence, neglect, trauma and other difficult circumstances, which may have lasting effects on their emotional and psychological wellbeing.

She stressed that mental-health challenges should not be treated with shame, ridicule or isolation, noting that early intervention and a supportive environment can make a significant difference in the recovery and wellbeing of affected persons.

According to her, early recognition of mental-health challenges, counselling, family support and access to appropriate professional care are essential in helping individuals overcome emotional difficulties, regain confidence and live meaningful lives.

Mrs. Onyekesi called on families and communities to pay closer attention to changes in the behaviour and emotional wellbeing of their loved ones, urging them to respond with understanding, compassion and support rather than judgement.

She also urged schools, religious institutions, community leaders and other stakeholders to promote mental-health awareness and help dispel misconceptions surrounding psychological and emotional challenges.

The Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare to promoting the wellbeing, protection and dignity of women, children and other vulnerable persons across the State.

She encouraged anyone experiencing emotional distress or feeling overwhelmed to speak up and seek appropriate support, stressing that asking for help is not a weakness but an important step towards healing, recovery and a healthier life.
