The Onitsha South Local Government Area(LGA) has announced a statewide environmental sanitation exercise scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., as part of efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
The announcement, signed by the LGA Secretary, Mr Paul Onuachalla, Esq., stated that the exercise would be monitored by an environmental task force, enforcement personnel, environmental health officials and other relevant officers under the leadership of the Mayor, Hon. Peter Ikechukwu Mofunanya (Orimili Nando).
He urged residents to participate actively by clearing and desilting drainage channels around their homes, business premises and other properties to ensure the free flow of water and reduce the risk of flooding.
Residents were also advised to properly bag their refuse and make it available for collection to enable the LGA’s waste evacuation trucks to remove accumulated waste promptly.
Waste management contractors operating within the area were equally encouraged to provide the necessary logistical support to ensure effective waste evacuation during and after the exercise.
The LGA Secretary warned that failure to comply with the sanitation directives could attract appropriate sanctions in line with existing environmental sanitation regulations.
He called on landlords, residents’ associations, community leaders, corporate organisations, groups and other stakeholders to support the exercise, stressing that maintaining a clean environment requires the cooperation of everyone.
He urged residents to make environmental cleanliness a regular practice beyond the monthly sanitation exercise.
