The Onitsha South Local Government Area held a valedictory session on April 14, for its first Executive Chairman, Late Chief Architect David Chukwuemeka Achu(Ogbukagu), who served from 1991 to 1993.

The solemn ceremony drew council officials, party members, and family to pay tribute to the late pioneer chairman.

Speaking at the event, the Mayor of Onitsha South LGA, Hon. Chief Emeka Orji, described Achu as a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly for his constituents and for Anambra State.

Orji, who was represented by his Deputy, Hon. Onyebuchi Obi said the session offered a chance to reflect on Achu’s legacy. “One of the advantages of this valedictory session is to know who David Achu was, and the testimonies here show that his life was a true representation of public service,” he said.

He prayed for the repose of Achu’s soul and for strength for the family he left behind, especially his wife.

In a tribute, the Leader of the Onitsha South Congress of Councillors, Hon. Mrs. Regina Udeogalanya, described the late Achu as “a father, brother, mentor and a friend who was more than a leader.”

Her Deputy, Hon. Franklin Onyeka, who read the tribute, said Achu’s tenure as Mayor was defined not only by progress and development but by compassion, humility, and genuine love for his people.

Udeogalanya noted that Achu stood firm in loyalty and dedication as a committed All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA member, contributing immensely to the strength and unity of the party.

“His passing leaves a void that words cannot fully express. However, we take solace in the beautiful memories he left behind and the countless lives he touched with his generosity and humanity.” She extended condolences to the family, praying for God’s comfort and strength.

Pharm. Ikenna Achu, first son of the deceased, said his father’s death is a very big loss to the family. We will miss his fatherly presence, guidance, and advice. He prayed for his father’s soul to rest with his Maker and pledged to keep the family united under his watch as first son.

Highlighting his late father’s record, Pharm. Ikenna Achu recalled that his late father was among those credited with the development of Bridgehead Market, the construction of several roads in Fegge, including Zik Avenue and the regulation of taxes at the Ogbo Ewu Market during his time as executive chairman.

Late Chief Arch. David Chukwuemeka Achu, Ogbukagu, died at 78. He will be buried on April 22, 2026, in his country home at Umuojogwo Village, Amanasaa Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area.
