‎Residents of Onitsha have called on children and wards to provide adequate care and support for their fathers, especially in old age, citing increasing cases of neglect despite the sacrifices many fathers made for their families.
‎
‎In separate interviews on June 23, community members expressed concern over the growing abandonment of elderly fathers, noting that while many dads forego personal comforts to train and provide for their children, they often receive little attention in later years.
‎
‎Mr. Okechukwu Nwabueze said fathers dedicate much of their lives to ensuring the welfare and education of their families, yet some end up experiencing loneliness and neglect when age sets in.
‎
‎Chief Chinwendu Olisa observed that changing family dynamics and social attitudes have contributed to fathers being overlooked, even though they play a vital role in providing food, shelter, and other necessities. He urged children to recognize their responsibility toward their fathers’ welfare by offering care, companionship, and support.
‎
‎Also speaking, Mr. Clement Okoye-Eze noted that Father’s Day receives less public attention than Mother’s Day, and called on society to accord fathers the love, respect, and care they deserve. He stressed that the absence of a father often leaves lasting emotional and practical challenges for families.
‎
‎The residents collectively appealed to families and society to appreciate fathers while they are alive, emphasizing that honoring their contributions is key to strengthening family values and social stability.
