Onitsha North Local Government Area(LGA) is exploring a waste-to-power partnership with Shuangfeng County, Loudi, Hunan Province, China, as part of efforts to strengthen sustainable waste management and environmental protection through its recently established sister-city relationship.

The Mayor of Onitsha North, Hon. Nweze Tony Nwora, disclosed the development on July 22 during a meeting with the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr. Law Mefor, while highlighting the LGA’s ongoing environmental management initiatives.

According to the mayor, a delegation from Shuangfeng County is expected to visit Onitsha North in the coming months to assess opportunities for collaboration in waste management and environmental sustainability. The visit is expected to deepen bilateral cooperation and identify practical solutions to the environmental challenges associated with rapid urbanisation.

Hon. Nwora explained that the visiting team will study the volume and composition of waste generated within the LGA to determine how waste-to-power technology and other technical solutions can be adapted to meet the area’s environmental and energy needs.

He noted that the proposed partnership is expected to explore innovative methods of converting municipal waste into useful energy, while improving environmental sanitation, reducing pollution and creating new opportunities for investment and economic growth.

As one of Nigeria’s busiest commercial centres, Onitsha North continues to face increasing waste management demands driven by rapid population growth and commercial activities. The mayor said the proposed collaboration represents a proactive step towards addressing these challenges through modern and sustainable solutions.

He reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to building strategic international partnerships that promote innovation, environmental sustainability and improved quality of life for residents.

If successfully implemented, the initiative is expected to transform waste from an environmental challenge into a valuable resource for clean energy generation, while supporting sustainable urban development in Onitsha North.
