Commercial activities resumed at full scale on today as Onitsha Main Market recorded a very high level of compliance on the second consecutive Monday following the suspension of the sit-at-home order in Anambra State.
By early morning, traders had opened shops across major sections of the market, while a few customers arrive from Onitsha, neighbouring towns, and other parts of the state. The atmosphere marked a sharp departure from the deserted Mondays that defined the past four years.
Key trading areas, including Young Plaza, White House, Lagos line and surrounding market streets were visibly active, with goods on display and transactions ongoing. Security operatives were also present, maintaining order and reinforcing confidence among traders and shoppers.

Speaking to newsmen at Young Plaza, Mr. Chigozie Okeke, a trader, expressed satisfaction with the development.
“I am very happy to be in the market today. This is the second Monday we are opening, and you can see that people are no longer afraid. I thank Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the good work he is doing for traders and for restoring our confidence to do business again,” he said.
Another trader, Mrs. Chioma Okolo at Johnson Street, also shared her excitement over the steady reopening of Monday trading.
“Today is much better than the first Monday. Customers are coming in, and we are selling our goods freely. I am happy that Mondays are working days again. This change means a lot to us,” she said.
Market observers noted that compliance was significantly higher compared to the first Monday reopening, as more traders who were initially cautious returned to their shops. Commercial transport services also operated without disruption, further easing movement to and from the market.
The renewed economic activity follows the directive of Governor Chukwuma Soludo to end the Monday sit-at-home practice, a move aimed at reviving the state’s economy, safeguarding livelihoods, and restoring normalcy across Anambra.
Government officials have reiterated that security arrangements remain in place to sustain the peace and protect businesses, urging residents to continue supporting the policy.
The strong turnout recorded on this second Monday signals growing public confidence and marks another major step in Anambra State’s journey toward full economic recovery.
