Residents of Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State have on June 24, raised concerns over the recurring incidents of flooding and erosion affecting several parts of the community, particularly during the rainy season.
The affected areas, marked by blocked drainage systems, stagnant water, and environmental deterioration, continue to pose significant risks to lives, property, and economic activities. Many residents disclosed that heavy rainfall often results in floodwaters overflowing into homes and surrounding neighborhoods, causing anxiety and disruption to daily life.
In response to the situation, member representing Okpoko Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Nonso Noble Igwe, visited some of the affected locations and assured residents that government authorities were fully aware of the challenges confronting the area.
During the inspection, Hon. Igwe reiterated his commitment to engaging relevant agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the environmental problems facing the constituency receive the necessary attention and intervention.
The lawmaker expressed confidence that, with the support of the administration of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo, sustainable solutions would be implemented to address erosion and flooding in vulnerable parts of Okpoko.
He noted that the state government remains committed to infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and urban renewal, adding that efforts are being intensified to improve drainage networks and rehabilitate affected areas.
Hon. Igwe also urged residents to complement government initiatives by maintaining proper environmental sanitation and refraining from indiscriminate disposal of refuse in drainage channels, stressing that community participation is vital to flood prevention.
He commended community leaders, youth groups, market unions, and other stakeholders for their continued advocacy and dedication to the development of Okpoko.
Residents welcomed the assurances and expressed optimism that the collaborative efforts of Hon. Igwe and Gov. Soludo would bring lasting relief and address the persistent flooding and erosion challenges affecting the community.
