Prominent Igbo leaders, traditional rulers, political figures and other stakeholders on September 22 gathered in Lagos for the public presentation of a new book to mark the 50th anniversary of Ohaneze Ndigbo.
The book, titled “The Burden of Memory, The Politics of Relevance”, written by Agbeze Ireke Kalu Onuma, examines the organisation’s five-decade history, challenges and future.
Speaking during the book presentation, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, called for institutional renewal, unity and stronger collective action among the Igbo.
The royal father charged the organisation to maintain its identity as a socio-cultural organisation rather than becoming an instrument of partisan politics.
In his remarks, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, said that the book offered an opportunity to examine the organisation’s history, leadership and future.
Governor Otti urged the younger generation to build on Igbo heritage through institutions that embrace technology, innovation, the diaspora and economic development.
The governor commended the author for undertaking the work and described the book as a call to action on institutional renewal.
Reviewing the 602-page publication, Prof. Okey Anueyiagu called for the renewed attention to cultural preservation, education, youth development, technology, economic cooperation and the documentation of Igbo history.
