The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, has praised the management of General Hospital, Enugwu-Ukwu, for sustaining a fully operational blood bank that plays a vital role in saving lives.
Dr. Obidike gave the commendation on June 16 during the hospital’s celebration of World Blood Donor Day at the hospital. The event was jointly organised by the State Medical Support Services and the Medical Laboratory Department.

Speaking at the event, the commissioner praised the hospital for its commitment to ensuring the availability of safe and adequate blood for patients. He revealed that the facility had provided blood support to several accident victims within the past three months, describing the gesture as a vital intervention that helped save lives.
He called on members of the public to embrace voluntary blood donation as a civic responsibility, especially during emergencies, stressing that regular donations remain essential for effective healthcare delivery and improved patient outcomes.

Dr. Obidike also expressed appreciation to regular blood donors present at the event for their selfless contributions and encouraged them to sustain the noble act. He further commended the Medical Laboratory Department for its dedication and professionalism, urging its personnel to continue supporting government healthcare programmes.
The commissioner equally advised the hospital management to create and maintain a comprehensive register of blood donors, including their names and contact information, to enable quick mobilisation whenever blood is urgently required.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to workers’ welfare, he stated that Governor Chukwuma Soludo approved salary increases for some categories of workers last year and assured that further welfare improvements are being considered.
In his remarks, the Anambra State General Hospital Administrator, Dr. Frank Ifeanaeme, lauded the blood donors for their selfless commitment and prayed for God’s continued blessings upon them.
He also expressed appreciation to healthcare workers for their teamwork and enthusiastic participation in the World Blood Donor Day celebration, an annual event that honours and recognises voluntary blood donors for their invaluable role in saving lives and supporting healthcare services.
