The Mayor of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Tony Nwora, has commended members of the RATELS movement for responding to the deplorable condition of a public park along the Onitsha Expressway, opposite Upper Iweka, by mobilising to clean up the area.
Nwora gave the commendations after visiting the site to encourage the volunteers and appreciate their intervention, describing their action as a demonstration of responsible citizenship and community spirit.
The RATELS team, led by VDM Awka and AGU WNA 001, had earlier embarked on a clean-up exercise at the park following public attention drawn to the poor state of the environment.

Speaking during his visit, Nwora said that the initiative reflected the importance of citizens taking ownership of the communities in which they live, stressing that government alone could not be expected to address every environmental challenge.
He said that the cleanliness and transformation of the environment remained a priority of the administration of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, but emphasised that achieving a cleaner, healthier and more liveable state required the active participation of residents.
According to him, citizens should not merely identify problems or complain about them but should also be prepared to take constructive steps towards finding solutions whenever such actions fall within their civic responsibilities.
Nwora recalled the governor’s message during the 35th Anniversary of Anambra State, urging residents to “see something, say something, but most importantly, do something.”
He saidty the intervention by the RATELS members was a practical demonstration of that principle.
“This is exactly the spirit we witnessed today. When something is within our civic responsibility, we should not always wait for someone else to act. We must be willing to do our part,” Nwora said.
The Mayor particularly commended VDM Awka, Sylvia Oluoma and other members of the RATELS movement for their initiative, urging them to sustain the effort and continue making positive contributions to their communities.
He also called on residents, community organisations and other stakeholders to embrace similar initiatives, stressing that environmental cleanliness should be regarded as a collective responsibility.
“A cleaner Onitsha is a responsibility we all share,” Nwora said, while encouraging residents to support efforts aimed at improving the city’s environment and public spaces.
