Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), has organised a capacity-building workshop for Teaching Practice Supervisors to enhance their competence ahead of the 2026 Teaching Practice Exercise.

The workshop, held on July 1, brought together members of the College Management, Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, lecturers, teaching practice supervisors and other stakeholders to strengthen the quality of supervision, ensuring effective preparation of student teachers for classroom practice.

Declaring the workshop open, the Provost of the College, Engr. Prof. Victor Ndirika, FNIAE, represented by the Dean of Deans, Dr. Ifeoma Orakwue, described teaching practice as a vital component of teacher education that enables student teachers to bridge the gap between theory and classroom practice.

He noted that the exercise provides aspiring teachers with opportunities to develop essential professional competencies, including lesson planning, classroom management, communication skills, learner assessment and professional ethics.

The Provost urged supervisors to carry out their responsibilities with diligence, fairness and professionalism, emphasizing the importance of providing constructive feedback that would help student teachers develop into competent and effective educators.

The workshop featured presentations by experienced resource persons on key aspects of teaching practice supervision.

Dr. Nneka Nwaka presented a paper titled “Critical Analysis of the Teaching Practice Evaluation Instrument with Special Emphasis on Clinical Supervision,” where she explained the proper use of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) Teaching Practice Assessment Instrument, highlighting the importance of clinical supervision and post-observation conferences in improving teaching effectiveness.

In another presentation, Mr. Ibeto Michael spoke on “Relevant Teaching Skills as Instruments for Effective Teaching Practice,” stressing the need for effective lesson planning, sound classroom management, appropriate instructional methods and the formulation of measurable learning objectives.

Delivering the final paper, Dr. Amaechi Makasi discussed “Cooperating Schools as Co-Educators: Analysing Expectations for Successful Teaching Practice”, emphasizing the importance of strong collaboration among the college, cooperating schools, supervising lecturers, mentor teachers and student teachers in achieving successful teaching practice outcomes.

The workshop featured interactive sessions during which participants shared experiences, sought clarification on supervision and assessment procedures, and received practical guidance on maintaining high professional standards throughout the exercise.

Participants described the workshop as timely, insightful and impactful, expressing confidence that the knowledge gained would improve the quality of teaching practice supervision and contribute to producing competent, reflective and professionally responsible teachers.
