Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, has warned that environmental degradation, flooding and climate change pose serious threats to food security, stressing that a healthy environment is essential for sustainable agricultural production.

Dr. Aguiyi stated this in Awka while serving as Chairman of the Occasion at the 2026 World Food Day celebration organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Anambra State.
Speaking on the nexus between environmental security and food security, he highlighted the impact of gully erosion, contaminated water, poor waste management and communal conflicts on farming and food supply.

The commissioner disclosed that Anambra has over 1,200 active gully erosion sites, while the state generates more than 1,500 tonnes of solid waste daily, much of which could be converted into compost to improve soil fertility.

He called for stronger collaboration between the environment and agriculture sectors, advocating regenerative agriculture, waste-to-compost initiatives, gully reclamation, tree planting and climate-resilient farming.

Dr. Aguiyi maintained that environmental protection must be treated as a food security priority, declaring that safeguarding the land, water and peace of farming communities is essential to ensuring sustainable food production.

The event attracted government officials, traditional rulers, farmers’ cooperatives, development partners and students.
