The Mayor of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, has declared a State of Emergency on Environmental Sanitation and announced a series of environmental, security and urban renewal initiatives aimed at improving the cleanliness, safety and appearance of the council area.
Speaking during a live programme on Choice FM, Hon. Anazodo said the council has declared a sanitation lockdown from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on July 4, to facilitate a comprehensive environmental sanitation exercise across the local government.
He disclosed that the council will immediately begin large-scale desilting of drainage channels in all communities and markets in Nnewi North. According to him, sanitation teams have already been mobilised to evacuate refuse and silt immediately after the exercise, while market leaders have been directed to ensure full compliance with the governor’s environmental sanitation directive.
The Mayor acknowledged that flooding remains a global challenge but stressed that residents have a vital role to play by keeping drainage channels free of waste. He warned against indiscriminate refuse disposal, stating that the council would no longer tolerate practices that pollute the environment or contribute to flooding. He added that efforts are also underway to address erosion-prone areas across the local government.
On security, Hon. Anazodo announced plans to commence the profiling of all commercial motorcycle and tricycle operators in Nnewi North. He said the initiative will include the introduction of Security Identity Number jackets to strengthen monitoring and enhance public safety, following recent security assessments.
As part of ongoing efforts to transform the town’s landscape, the Mayor revealed that the Anambra State Government has commenced the second phase of demolition around the Nnewi roundabout to support urban renewal and improve the area’s outlook.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a cleaner, safer and more prosperous Nnewi North that future generations will be proud to inherit.
