House agents in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area, have expressed mixed reactions to the Anambra State Government’s proposed measures aimed at curbing arbitrary increases in house rents across the state.
Speaking on the development, a house agent, Mr. Nwabunwanne Offor, praised Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for taking steps to protect residents from excessive rental charges expressing concern that lower rents could reduce the commissions earned by estate agents.
Another agent, Mrs. Ngozi Udeh, noted that the proposed policy could significantly affect her income since agency fees are largely based on the value of house rents. She acknowledged that more affordable rents would also ease her own housing costs.
Mr. Chike Onwuli also shared mixed feelings about the proposal, saying that while the policy would provide much-needed relief for tenants, it could negatively impact the earnings of estate agents.
On his part, Mr. Nnamdi Okoro welcomed the government’s planned intervention, stressing that the welfare of the people should take precedence over personal financial interests. According to him, many residents are finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the high cost of accommodation.
Mr. Okoro appealed to landlords to adopt more moderate rental charges, noting that affordable housing would improve living standards and reduce the economic hardship faced by many families across the state.
Similarly, Mr. Ojo Joseph encouraged fellow house agents to embrace the proposed reforms and explore alternative opportunities, expressing confidence that new prospects would emerge even if agency commissions decline.
The respondents also urged the Anambra State Government to take the concerns of estate agents into account when implementing any rent regulation policy, saying a balanced approach would protect both tenants and stakeholders in the real estate sector.
Gov. Soludo’s proposed intervention is expected to address growing concerns over rising house rents in Anambra State, with many residents hopeful that the initiative will improve access to affordable housing if fully implemented.
