By Doris Onyekachi
The Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri, Anambra State, has commenced night flight operations following the completion and installation of a new airfield lighting system by the state government.
The development is expected to enhance the airport’s safety, efficiency and accessibility, allowing airlines to conduct landing and take-off operations during the night.

According to the Anambra State Government on Aug 28, the project included the replacement of runway lights that had previously been vandalised, as well as a comprehensive upgrade of the airport’s operational facilities.
The airport has also been upgraded from Category Five to Category Seven, while work is ongoing to attain Category Nine status, which will pave the way for the commencement of full cargo operations.
Since its inauguration in 2021, the airport has recorded more than 8,624 flights and handled over 600,000 passengers, according to the state government.
The latest improvements were carried out under the administration of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as part of efforts to strengthen Anambra’s aviation infrastructure and position the state as a major business and transportation hub in the South-East.
