As the world marks Women’s Equality Day, attention is drawn to the importance of equal opportunities, dignity, participation and empowerment for women and girls.
Women’s Equality Day originated in the United States and commemorates the certification of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920, which recognised American women’s constitutional right to vote. Today, the occasion provides a broader opportunity to reflect on women’s rights, opportunities and contributions to society.
For Anambra State, the observance offers an opportunity to reflect on the important role women play in the state’s social and economic development under the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
The Soludo administration has placed emphasis on human capital development, social inclusion and the empowerment of women and girls. Its interventions in areas such as education, healthcare, skills development and economic empowerment are important steps towards creating an environment where women can contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth.
Women remain a driving force in Anambra’s economy, particularly in trade, agriculture, entrepreneurship, education, healthcare and community development. Expanding access to skills, finance, healthcare and leadership opportunities can further strengthen their capacity to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to economic progress.
Equally important is the need to protect women and girls from violence, discrimination and abuse. Gender equality goes beyond celebration; it requires practical policies, strong institutions and sustained action that safeguard rights and create opportunities for women to reach their full potential.
The contributions of the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, particularly in promoting healthy living, family welfare, women’s wellbeing and economic self-reliance, also underscore the importance of placing women and families at the centre of development.
As Anambra continues its development journey, Women’s Equality Day serves as a reminder that women should not only benefit from development but also have a meaningful voice in shaping it as entrepreneurs, professionals, community leaders, decision makers and agents of change.
The responsibility therefore rests on government, communities, families and individuals to move beyond words and make equality a lived reality in homes, workplaces, businesses, institutions and leadership.
