On Saturday, Ave Maria Catholic Church, Nawfia, came alive with colourful event, music, and excitement as parishioners staged a grand match past and cake-cutting ceremony ahead of Mothering Sunday.
The event attracted a large crowd and was staged ahead of Sunday Mass, bringing together the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO), youths, and children of the parish to collectively honour mothers.
The Parish Priest, Fr. Ezeokonkwo Regniguoes, officiated the ceremony in conjunction with leaders of the Catholic Women Organisation and selected mothers. The occasion was met with resounding applause and acclamation, serving as an expression of love, unity, and profound appreciation for the invaluable role of mothers within the Church.
In his address, Fr. Ezeokonkwo lauded the women and organisers for their unwavering commitment. “This celebration constitutes a fitting means of preparing our hearts for Mothering Sunday. Our mothers are deserving of honour, and I am gratified to witness such dedication and joy within the parish,” he stated.
A member of the Catholic Women Organisation expressed her gratification regarding the event, stating: “We are pleased to assemble in this manner. The march past is a demonstration of our unity, while the cake-cutting ceremony symbolises love and fellowship among us.”
Also, a youth participant recounted his experience, stating: “Participating in the march past was a delightful experience. There was a general atmosphere of joy, and it was fulfilling to honour our mothers in advance of Sunday.”
One of the parishioners, Mr. Ifeanyi Okechukwu, observed that the activities lent greater significance to the celebration. “Commencing the celebration on Saturday renders it more memorable. It fosters a spirit of collective joy among all prior to the principal Mass,” he remarked.
