The visiting Priest at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Awka, Rev. Fr. Paul Mary Orji, has urged mothers to raise their children in a Godly way to help build a stronger society.
Delivering his homily during Mothering Sunday Mass, Fr. Orji emphasized that mothers play a central role in shaping the home, Church, and the wider community, describing them as “the backbone of our homes.”
According to the cleric, mothers contribute to nation-building by nurturing responsible children who grow to become upright citizens. He stressed that the moral foundation laid in the family is critical to the health of society.
Fr. Orji reminded mothers that their children are their greatest investment, noting that no material wealth can surpass the value of raising children who are disciplined, God-fearing, and compassionate.
He further advised mothers to instill moral values in their children from an early age. “Train them while they are young so that they will not depart from it when they grow.”
The priest lamented that some mothers no longer devote enough time to their children, a trend he warned has contributed to moral decline in society.
Fr. Orji also encouraged mothers to lead by example, particularly in their mode of dressing, noting that children often emulate their parents, and responsible attire can reinforce positive values.
The cleric acknowledged the sacrifices mothers make in their journey of motherhood.
He highlighted the physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges they endure, including the risks associated with childbirth.
He paid tribute to mothers who lost their lives while giving birth, describing them as martyrs of love and sacrifice.
The priest expressed gratitude to mothers for their tireless efforts in sustaining families, urging the congregation to recognize and appreciate the daily contributions of mothers, often carried out quietly and without recognition.
Turning to children, he enjoined them to show love, respect, and gratitude to their mothers, adding that honoring parents is a divine commandment and a pathway to blessings.
Fr Orji emphasized that when mothers fulfill their roles faithfully, and children respond with respect and love, that the home would become a sanctuary of peace, and society would reap the benefits of stability and moral strength.
