Mothering Sunday was celebrated today, April 19, 2026, by the Catholic community worldwide as a special day set aside to honour mothers.

Speaking during his homily at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Ifite-Awka, Anambra State, the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Donatus Onyeanusi, emphasized the importance of mothers in the family and society, urging people to appreciate them, especially on a day dedicated to their celebration.
He encouraged everyone to reach out to their mothers and wives, spend quality time with them where possible, and show them love and affection.

During the service, the Parish Vicar, Rev. Fr. Jude Muokwe, offered special prayers for all mothers present, asking God to guide, protect, prosper, and sustain them in sound health.

Members of the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) of the parish participated actively in the Mass, taking leading roles in altar service, choir presentations, and scripture readings.

The parish CWO President, Mrs. Patricia Mmaduka, highlighted the benefits of being a registered member of the organisation and encouraged mothers yet to join to do so.

The group also appealed for financial support from the congregation through voluntary donations, as well as the sale of almanacs and caps produced to mark this year’s Mothering Sunday celebration.

Mrs. Mmaduka and the priests appreciated all those who supported the organisation financially and offered prayers for them.

Chikodili is of the Ministry of Information, Anambra State.
