MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: A CALL FOR OPEN CONVERSATION AND EARLY SUPPORT

By Angela Nwanodu

As global advocacy for mental health continues to gain momentum, stakeholders have been urged to pay greater attention to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of men and boys within families, workplaces, and communities.

Although June is not officially designated as an international observance for men’s mental health, it has increasingly been recognized by health advocates and organizations worldwide as a period to raise awareness about the mental health challenges facing men. These challenges include stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional struggles that often go unreported due to stigma and societal expectations.

Many men are conditioned to suppress their emotions and endure difficulties in silence, often carrying significant psychological burdens without seeking help. Mental health experts warn that this culture of silence can have serious consequences for individuals, families, and society as a whole.

According to health professionals, mental wellbeing is a vital component of overall health and deserves the same level of attention and care as physical health. They emphasize the importance of creating supportive environments that encourage men to speak openly about their challenges and seek professional assistance when necessary.

Promoting open conversations, early intervention, and access to mental health support services remains critical to addressing these concerns. Families, community leaders, employers, and government institutions all have important roles to play in reducing stigma and fostering a culture of understanding and support.

This awareness period serves as a reminder that true strength lies not in silence, but in the courage to seek help and support when needed.

As communities continue to champion mental health awareness, collective action remains essential in building a healthier, more resilient, and more compassionate society.
