The Executive Council of the National Association of Political Science Students (NAPSS), Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, on June 17, paid a courtesy visit to the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Dr. Law Mefor, to seek guidance and support ahead of the Association’s maiden national conference.

Leading the delegation, the President of the Association, Comrade Anchor Armstrong, explained that the conference is aimed at bringing together political science students from across the country to promote active participation in governance, leadership, and national development. He noted that the initiative is designed to showcase the practical relevance of political science beyond theoretical classroom learning.
Addressing the students, Dr. Mefor commended their commitment to student unionism and leadership development, describing campus leadership as an important platform for grooming future leaders and public servants.

He urged the students to place academic excellence at the forefront of their pursuits, emphasizing that their primary responsibility in the university is to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful future.
“Primarily, your presence in the university is to equip yourself for a more promising future,” the Commissioner stated.
Dr. Mefor further stressed that politics should serve as a vehicle for dialogue, negotiation, and societal progress rather than a tool for conflict and division. Expressing concern over the growing incidence of cultism and violence in tertiary institutions, he advised students to shun intimidation, criminality, and other social vices.

According to him, true leadership is anchored on discipline, intellectual capacity, integrity, and a commitment to service. He also encouraged the students to strike a healthy balance between their academic responsibilities and leadership engagements, noting that success in both areas requires dedication and discipline.
Highlighting the achievements of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration in the education sector, Dr. Mefor described the government as one of the most education-focused administrations in Anambra State’s history.
He disclosed that the state’s performance in key public examinations, including the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO) examinations, has recorded significant improvement, rising from about 60 per cent to over 80 per cent as a result of strategic reforms and sustained investment in education.
The commissioner also lauded the state’s expanded free education policy, which provides educational access up to the senior secondary school level. He noted that the initiative has enhanced access to quality education while reducing the financial burden on parents and guardians across the state.
In her vote of thanks, Miss Ofomata Favour Chidimma, expressed gratitude to the commissioner for his insightful guidance and words of encouragement. She lauded the Anambra State Government for its unwavering commitment to advancing education and reaffirmed the association’s resolve to uphold the principles of responsible leadership, academic excellence, and the Soludo Solution Vision in both their academic pursuits and civic responsibilities.
