The Chairman of Idemili North Local Government Area (LGA), Hon. Stanley Nkwoka, has declared July 4 a mandatory environmental sanitation exercise in compliance with the directive of the Anambra State Government.

To ensure the successful conduct of the exercise, movement will be restricted across the LGA from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Only persons on essential duties will be permitted to move during the sanitation period.

The LGA chairman has directed all residents, landlords, traders, market unions, transport operators, churches and schools to participate fully by cleaning their surroundings, clearing gutters, desilting drainage channels, evacuating refuse from their homes, business premises and public spaces.

As part of measures to support the exercise, the Idemili North LGA will deploy tippers and sanitation personnel to designated waste collection points across the LGA for the evacuation and proper disposal of refuse.

Hon. Nkwoka warned residents against dumping refuse into drainage channels, streams and waterways or engaging in activities that obstruct the free flow of water, noting that such practices contribute significantly to flooding and environmental degradation.

He urged residents to embrace environmental cleanliness as a collective responsibility, stressing that maintaining a clean and healthy environment is essential to safeguarding public health and promoting sustainable development.

He called on community leaders, religious organisations, market associations and other stakeholders to mobilise residents for active participation, reaffirming the LGA’s commitment to ensuring a cleaner, healthier and flood-free Idemili North.
