The Nnewi North Local Government Council, under the leadership of the Mayor, Hon. Echezona Anazodo, has concluded plans to support more than 400 registered farmers across the council area as part of efforts to enhance food security and agricultural productivity.
The empowerment programme, scheduled to hold on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at the Nnewi North Local Government Secretariat, will provide beneficiaries with improved seedlings, fertiliser, and cash grants to increase yields for the current planting season.
Speaking on the initiative, Hon. Anazodo stated that the intervention underscores his administration’s commitment to rural development and the promotion of sustainable livelihoods. He emphasised that agriculture remains central to the local economy, adding that direct assistance to farmers would result in higher productivity, improved household incomes, and a reduction in food prices.
According to the Council, beneficiaries were selected from all wards within the local government area through a transparent registration and verification exercise conducted by the Council’s Department of Agriculture to ensure that only genuine, practising farmers receive the support.
The Mayor further urged beneficiaries to judiciously utilise the inputs and funds provided, noting that the Council will monitor the programme to ensure accountability and measure its impact.
