The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council, Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, PhD, has called on members to close ranks and defend the integrity of the profession, vowing not to allow internal strife undermine the Union.
Speaking on May 7, at the Council’s May Congress held at the Ezemo Press Centre, Awka, Odogwu said the gathering was aimed at repositioning the Union and rooting out divisive elements.
“Today’s Congress is to revive the Union from some people who do not have the interest of the Union at heart, thereby causing chaos, sowing the seed of discord among members of the Union, causing enmity between journalists but I won’t allow that to happen. Come, let us unite and move forward,” he said.

The NUJ Chairman further said that the Council had been dedicated to God and expressed optimism that 2026 would bring renewal. “This year God Almighty is going to do wonders because we have dedicated the Council to him. This Union is standing for Christ,” he declared.
He, then, challenged journalists to uphold the dignity of their profession, stressing that respect for journalism begins with self-respect.
“When you cherish your profession, people will cherish it. When you disregard your profession, people will disregard this profession,” the Chairman said.

Odogwu credited his achievements including travel to 22 countries and creating jobs for others to journalism, and urged members to value the profession.
“Anything I have made is from this profession. Why would journalists not cherish it? Please, I urge you to cherish it, guide it, protect it, and make people out there respect this profession,” he added.
The monthly May Congress brings together journalists from NUJ chapels across Anambra to deliberate on Union matters and issues affecting the state.
