As the world commemorates International Widows’ Day on June 23, attention is drawn to the challenges faced by millions of widows who continue to grapple with economic hardship, social exclusion, and the responsibility of caring for their families. The observance highlights the need for policies and programmes that protect the rights and welfare of widows and other vulnerable groups.

In Anambra State, the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has continued to prioritize people-centred governance through investments in healthcare, education, economic empowerment, and social welfare. While not specifically designed for widows, many of these initiatives have provided support for women raising families alone.

One of the administration’s notable achievements is the revitalization of primary healthcare facilities across the state, improving access to quality and affordable healthcare for vulnerable families. The introduction of free antenatal care and free delivery services for pregnant women in government-owned health facilities has further eased the burden on many households, especially widows and low-income families, by ensuring that maternal and child healthcare services remain accessible regardless of financial status.

Equally significant is the government’s commitment to education through infrastructural development, recruitment of teachers, and the introduction of free education in public primary and secondary schools. The policy has eased the financial burden on many parents and guardians, particularly widows who often shoulder family responsibilities alone. By removing school fees, the initiative has helped ensure that children from vulnerable families remain in school and have access to better opportunities.

The Soludo administration has also expanded opportunities for economic empowerment through its flagship ‘1 Youth 2 Skills’ programme. The initiative equips young people with vocational and entrepreneurial skills, provides startup support, and promotes self-reliance. For widows and vulnerable families, such programmes create opportunities for their children and dependents to acquire productive skills, secure livelihoods, and contribute meaningfully to household income and community development.

The Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare has also continued to champion programmes that support women, widows, and other vulnerable groups through welfare interventions, empowerment initiatives, and advocacy efforts. These programmes complement the Soludo administration’s vision of building an inclusive society where no one is left behind.

Complementing these interventions is the advocacy of the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, whose programmes continue to promote women’s welfare, healthy living, and family development. Through engagements with women groups and community associations, she has consistently championed self-reliance, social inclusion, and economic empowerment.

As the world marks International Widows’ Day, the occasion serves as a reminder that widows deserve not only compassion but also access to opportunities that enable them to live with dignity and hope. Through its investments in healthcare, maternal welfare, education, youth empowerment, and human capital development, the Soludo administration continues to create a supportive environment where vulnerable families can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the development of Anambra State.
