As the world marks International Widows Day on June 23, Anambra State is highlighting its commitment to the dignity, welfare and economic empowerment of widows through a range of government-led programmes and social protection initiatives that are transforming the lives of vulnerable women across the state.

The global observance, recognised annually by the United Nations, shines a light on the poverty, discrimination and injustice faced by millions of widows and their dependants worldwide. In Anambra, the Soludo administration has taken deliberate steps to ensure that widows are not invisible to government but are actively included in the state’s development agenda.

A significant expression of this commitment is the women’s empowerment programme championed by the wife of the governor, Mrs. Nonye Soludo. Through this initiative, widows, non-indigenes and vulnerable women were specifically identified and selected across wards for targeted empowerment, receiving productive assets including grinding and sewing machines to support their livelihoods and economic independence.

Complementing this effort is the state’s broader social welfare framework, which provides grants to micro-businesses across all 326 wards in Anambra. Many of the beneficiaries of this programme are widows and women-headed households who rely on small-scale trade and enterprise to support their families and who now have access to government-backed financial support to grow and sustain their businesses.

The state’s free healthcare programme has also been a lifeline for widows, many of whom are elderly and managing chronic health conditions with limited financial resources. Through free antenatal care, free delivery services and the planned expansion of free treatment for common childhood illnesses and selected chronic diseases for the poorest families, the administration is addressing the health vulnerabilities that disproportionately affect widows and their children.

Anambra has equally prioritised skills acquisition and vocational training as tools for widows’ empowerment. Through the One Youth, Two Skills programme and other capacity-building initiatives, women including widows are being equipped with digital, entrepreneurial and vocational skills that open pathways to sustainable income and economic self-sufficiency.

The state’s community-based support structures, anchored by traditional rulers, women’s groups and town unions, continue to play a vital role in providing social support to widows at the grassroots level. The Soludo administration has strengthened these structures, recognising that the protection and inclusion of widows requires not just government policy, but community solidarity and cultural sensitivity.

Beyond direct empowerment, Anambra continues to promote legal awareness and the protection of women’s rights, ensuring that widows are not subjected to harmful traditional practices or deprived of their inheritance and property rights. These efforts align with the United Nations’ call on governments to uphold national laws that protect the rights of widows and their dependants.

As International Widows Day is observed globally, Anambra’s initiatives demonstrate that widows are not invisible to this administration, they are seen, supported and empowered. Under the Solution administration, the state is building a society where every woman, regardless of her circumstance, has the opportunity to live with dignity, security and hope.
