The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening literacy and numeracy among children, identifying foundational learning as critical to their educational development and future opportunities.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, stated this in a message marking International Literacy Day 2026, saying the state was implementing measures aimed at improving children’s access to education and supporting effective teaching and learning.
Ogugua said literacy was more than the ability to read and write, describing it as a foundation for learning, communication, informed decision making and participation in society.
He attributed the state’s education interventions to the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, noting that the government had introduced free education in public schools from pre-primary to senior secondary level as part of efforts to make basic education more accessible.
According to the commissioner, the government had also recruited 8,115 teachers, an intervention he said was intended to strengthen the teaching workforce and support the delivery of instruction in public schools.
Ogugua said the state was investing in smart schools as part of its technology driven approach to education.
He explained that the smart schools are designed to provide modern learning environments that incorporate digital devices, technology-supported teaching and contemporary educational facilities, giving pupils and teachers access to tools that complement conventional classroom instruction.
The commissioner said the government was also renovating schools, learning centres and special needs schools to provide more conducive and inclusive environments for learning.
He stressed that the objective was to ensure that children acquire not only basic literacy and numeracy but also digital and other essential skills needed to function effectively in a changing world.
“As we mark International Literacy Day, our message is clear: education is key, and literacy is the foundation upon which every child can build a better future,” Ogugua said.
The commissioner congratulated Ndi Anambra and education stakeholders marking the occasion, assuring that the Ministry of Education would continue to support efforts aimed at strengthening literacy, numeracy and quality learning across the state.
