‎The future of every society depends, to a great extent, on how it educates, nurtures and protects its girls. Every girl deserves access to quality education, the opportunity to develop her talents, protection from abuse and the freedom to contribute meaningfully to society.
‎
‎The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, provides an opportunity to draw attention to the challenges confronting girls and promote the protection of their rights, dignity and opportunities.
‎
‎The day also calls on governments, parents, schools, communities and relevant organisations to renew their commitment to ensuring that every girl has access to quality education, healthcare, safety and equal opportunities to fulfil her potential.
‎
‎Across Anambra State, investing in the education and empowerment of girls remains essential to building a knowledgeable, productive and prosperous society. When girls are given the necessary support and encouragement, they can grow into responsible leaders, skilled professionals, successful entrepreneurs and agents of positive change in their communities.
‎
‎Parents and guardians have a significant role to play in shaping the future of their daughters. They should encourage them to pursue education, acquire relevant skills, develop their talents and participate confidently in decisions affecting their lives. Equally important is the need to reject harmful traditional practices, child marriage, discrimination and gender-based violence that undermine the rights and potential of girls.
‎
‎Schools and community leaders must also work towards creating safe and inclusive learning environments where girls can express themselves freely, discover their abilities and pursue their ambitions without fear of intimidation, discrimination or abuse.
‎
‎Similarly, government agencies, civil society organisations and traditional institutions should strengthen efforts to protect vulnerable children through public awareness campaigns, mentorship programmes, skills acquisition initiatives and effective child-protection mechanisms. These interventions can help girls overcome barriers to their development and equip them with the confidence and resources needed to succeed.
‎
‎As Ndi Anambra joins the global community to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, families, communities and relevant stakeholders are encouraged to renew their commitment to investing in the education, welfare, safety and development of every girl child.
‎Empowering girls today is more than a commitment to their individual success; it is an investment in a stronger, safer, more inclusive and prosperous society tomorrow.
