The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, draws global attention to girls’ rights, education, protection and opportunities to realize their full potential.
The observance recognises the importance of creating an environment where every girl can access quality education, develop her abilities and participate meaningfully in community and national development.
Despite progress in several areas, girls continue to face challenges including gender-based violence, discrimination, child marriage, educational barriers and other practices that threaten their development and wellbeing.
Protecting the girl child requires collective responsibility from parents, schools, communities, government institutions and relevant organisations to ensure that girls grow up in safe and supportive environments.
Education remains a powerful instrument for empowering girls, equipping them with knowledge, practical skills and confidence to pursue their aspirations and contribute positively to society.
The Anambra State Government, under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, recognises human capital development as essential to building a liveable and prosperous homeland where young people can fulfil their potential.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to support girls’ education, promote equal opportunities at home and report suspected abuse or exploitation to appropriate authorities for necessary intervention.
Communities must also challenge harmful practices, encourage responsible parenting and strengthen awareness of children’s rights to safety, education, dignity and opportunities for personal development.
As the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child, residents are encouraged to protect girls, support their ambitions and promote a future where every girl can thrive.
