The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, has called on the Federal Government to prioritise equal access to education by providing girls with the necessary resources, conducive learning environments and opportunities to succeed.
In his goodwill message to mark this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, Udeze urged stakeholders, parents, teachers and communities to promote the empowerment of girls and protect their fundamental human rights.
The message, made available to journalists on Oct 11, by his Chief Press Secretary, Rev. Emma Madu, also called on relevant authorities to identify and address the needs and challenges confronting girls.
The speaker, who noted that girls with dreams could become women of vision, purpose and impact, advocated lasting solutions to the barriers they face, including discrimination, violence and inequality.
He further called for the enactment of more legislation to promote girl-child empowerment and create opportunities for girls to develop their talents and realise their full potential.
Udeze commended the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. (Mrs) Nonye Soludo, for her sustained campaign against the dehumanisation, sexual abuse and exploitation of girls in the state.
He emphasised the need to dismantle the barriers hindering girls’ progress, urging governments and other stakeholders to invest meaningfully in their education, protection and overall well-being.
